Help

Doughbert is a simple calculator that tells you how to feed your sourdough starter. You weigh the jar of starter, tell Doughbert how much the empty jar weighs, and it does the rest.

You need to know the weight in grams of the vessel you've got your starter in!

How it works

  1. Zero the scale. Tare it so it reads 0 g.
  2. Place the jar with starter on the scale.
  3. Enter the total weight (jar + starter).
  4. Enter the empty jar weight. Doughbert remembers this for next time.
  5. Tell Doughbert when you'll use it. Pick the option closest to when you plan to bake — or "just out of the fridge" to wake a dormant starter. Doughbert picks the right feeding ratio for you.
  6. Follow the feed. Remove the listed amount of starter, then add flour and water until the scale matches the "Jar + Starter" target.

Making more or less starter

Use the and + buttons on the result screen to grow or shrink your starter in 10% steps (50%–200%). At 200% you'll end up with twice as much new starter; at 50%, half as much. The "New starter weight" line shows what you'll have after the feed.

Add to home screen

For one-tap access, add Doughbert to your phone's home screen. On iPhone: tap the Share button in Safari, then Add to Home Screen.

If the icon ever looks out of date, remove the home-screen shortcut and add it again from Safari. iOS caches the icon at install time and won't refresh it on its own.
